Older or fragile originals sometimes need special treatment: in certain cases we use a mylar carrier to protect documents during scanning, and documents that need repair (rips, tears, holes) are prepped before scanning. There is no practical difference. Both terms describe scanning documents that are too large for a standard office scanner, such as blueprints, engineering drawings and maps.
